2) All sunscreens shield you from UVB rays, but look for a "Broad Spectrum" sunscreen and you'll avoid wrinkle-inducing UVA rays, also.

3) Check the expiration date--Toss sunscreen that's more than 3 years old.

4) No sunscreen for kids under 6 months.

5) Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply at least every 2 hours, even if it's water resistant.

The chemotherapy medication fluorouracil appears to reduce potentially precancerous skin patches and improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin, according to a report by U-M associate professor of dermatology Dana L. Sachs, M.D., in the June issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the Journal of the American Medical Association/Archives journals.

Fluorouracil stops the body from synthesizing thymine, a building block of DNA. This drug is used to treat cancers of the colon, head and neck, pancreas and other organs.

Sun Damaged Skin Can Lead To Variety of Skin Cancers

Patchy dry scales on the skin caused by the sun may lead to a variety of skin cancer according to a new study. Skin lesions that occur from sun exposure, known as actinic keratosis typically turn into squamous cell carcinoma. New research shows that pink lesions on the skin - actinic keratosis - from sun damage can come and go, eventually causing types of skin cancers previously unknown.

Unexpected Bacterial Diversity Found On Human Skin

The health of our skin - one of the body?s first lines of defense against illness and injury - depends upon the delicate balance between our own cells and the millions of bacteria and other one-celled microbes that live on its surface.

The health of our skin - one of the body?s first lines of defense against illness and injury - depends upon the delicate balance between our own cells and the millions of bacteria and other one-celled microbes that live on its surface. To better understand this balance, National Institutes of Health researchers have set out to explore the skin?s microbiome, which is all of the DNA, or genomes, of all of the microbes that inhabit human skin. Their initial analysis, published today in the journal Science, reveals that our skin is home to a much wider array of bacteria than previously thought.

The best sunscreen is the one you will use

Sunscreen use is important for health and skin. Too many of us don't use sunscreen, but it is important for the prevention of skin cancers. The best sunscreen is the one you will use. It has to "feel" good to them - not be too greasy, not have the wrong scent, be the right consistency (lotion vs cream).

It will not matter if it is SPF 15 or 3o if it never gets used. It is best to use sunscreen daily, all year around, especially on the face and neck. If you are in the habit of applying sunscreen to your face daily (even on overcast days), it won't be forgotten.
